DiDN'T THiNK i WOULD SEARCH OUT THiS PLACE. iN BYGONE TiMES, i WONDERED WHAT YOU, OR PEOPLE iN GENERAL, WOULD FiND HERE. NOW, i'M ONE OF THEM, SiTTiNG ON THiS DAMP WOODEN BENCH, HUNCHED SHOULDERS HURTiNG. i'M NOT KNOWiNG WHY… iT'S LiKE MY HEART'S GONE BLiND. THE ViEW, i MUST SAY, iSN'T TOO GREAT, CAN'T SEE NEiTHER ONE NOR THE OTHER SiTE. SO iN BETWEEN SEEM TO BE THE RECURRiNG THEME.
iN BETWEEN THE SiTES. iN BETWEEN THE TiMES. iN BETWEEN HEART AND HEAD. iN BETWEEN NOW AND THEN. iN BETWEEN YOU AND HER. iN BETWEEN REPROACHES AND SORROW.
AS i'M SiTTiNG HERE, i FEEL THE DAMPNESS CREEPiNG iN. THE DANK AiR SETS iTSELF ON MY CHEEKS. iT REMAiNS. AFTER A WHiLE, i ACKNOWLEDGE THE MOiSTURE iSN'T FED ONLY THROUGH THE AiR. i'M SORRY. SO, SO, SORRY. SiTTiNG ON THiS UNCOMFORTABLE BENCH, i BEMOAN MY ACTiONS. AND CRY SiLENT TEARS FOR YOU.
BECAUSE YOU WERE ALONE. BECAUSE i CAME TOO LATE. BECAUSE i FALED. BECAUSE WE LOST A LAST GOODBYE.
AFTER A WHiLE, MY THOUGHTS ARE REACHiNG OUT. MY SOUL SENDS TENDRiLS OF HEARTFELT WHiSPERS, WEAViNG A NET OF LOVE. iNCLUDiNG YOU AND HER AND ME. BETWEEN YOUR GRAVES, YOURS HERE SiNCE LAST YEAR, HERS FOR SO MUCH LONGER, i ALLOW MYSELF TO MOURN. FiNALLY. AFTER 12 LONG YEARS, THESE TEARS ARE ALSO FOR HER; SHE iS GONE SO LONG, AND i COULDN'T CRY FOR HER. NOW, AS YOU HAVE BOTH LEFT, i HOPE YOUR SPiRiTS ARE UNiTED AGAiN. i DON'T KNOW HOW LONG i STAY. BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN, iT iS LiKE iNViSiBLE SHACKLES ARE LOOSENED. PERMiSSiON iS GRANTED TO STAND UP AND TAKE THE FiRST STEP. AFTER FOLLOWiNG THE PATH HALFWAY DOWN, i PAUSE.
TURNiNG, i TAKE A DEEP BREATH. i LOVE YOU, MA. GOODBYE. ANOTHER DEEP BREATH. i LOVE YOU, PA. GOODBYE. AGAiN ONE DEEP BREATH. i'LL MiSS YOU. i'LL FORGiVE ME AND YOU. i'LL CHERiSH YOU.
Svenja, your poem is profoundly moving. You use the bench brilliantly both as a physical and emotional space. The recurring theme of “in between” poignantly captures the protagonist’s reflections and journey through grief. Through heartfelt repetition and vivid imagery, your poem navigates themes of love, loss, and forgiveness, culminating in its hopeful resolution. Bravo. It’s truly a marvellous monologue. 👏 I’d like to see this performed.

Lesley, thank you so much for your kind words. I had fun participating in your prompt despite the hard theme I chose.

It was well worth your effort! 👏

Svenja, your reflection on loss, in-between moments, and the tender resolution feels deeply personal and moving to me.

Oh, no. 😮💨 this one is realy personal. It was the last time I sat on a bench.

It reminded me of the friends I lost in the 90s… but no bench for me.
On a lighter note: I just screensaved an image of a bench plaque that says „In loving memory of Huw Davies. Used to sit here and shout Fuck Off at the seagulls.“
